How to Install the macOS 13 Ventura Developer Beta

Apple unveiled macOS 13 Ventura at this week’s WWDC keynote. The 13th macOS edition will come later this year with new productivity tools, greater gaming capabilities, and improvements to current applications and features. Check out our list of macOS 13 improvements for additional info.

People will naturally want to test out macOS 13 as soon as possible. While the macOS 13 beta will be made available to the general public in the coming weeks, Apple has made an even earlier build available to developers.

An Apple developer account costs $99 per year and needs the usage of an Apple device that is compatible with the next beta operating systems you wish to test, as well as the activation of certain account security settings.

Due to these criteria, this is likely not the best solution for the majority of users. The public beta is expected to be released in the summer, followed by the final version in the fall; both alternatives are superior for the ordinary Mac user. We also do not suggest that customers install the macOS 13 developer beta on their primary Macs, even if they have a developer account, due to the likelihood of bugs and other difficulties.

Nevertheless, the developer beta is now the only option to test out macOS 13 Ventura, so if you’re okay with the Developer account requirements (or already have one) and the other limitations, we’ll teach you how to set it up.

How to install the macOS 13 Ventura Developer Beta

Some programs in the macOS 13 beta may have errors, incomplete or missing functionality, and instability, so back up your files and data before installing. Follow the instructions below to install the beta after backing up.

  1. Visit the Apple Developer website.
  2. Proceed to Discover > macOS 13.
  3. Click Download in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  4. Sign in with your existing Apple developer account or create a new one.
  5. After logging in, navigate to the download page and save the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility to your computer.
  6. Double-click macOSDeveloperBetaAccessUtility.pkg in your downloads location to launch the installation. Follow the directions on-screen.
  7. When asked, click to download the macOS 13 beta from the App Store, or navigate to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Software Update to initiate the update. If there are no accessible updates, restart your Mac and check again. It’s possible that the update will take a few minutes to show.
  8. Observe while the update downloads. Consider that this may take some time. When the update is complete, your Mac will prompt you to install it.
  9. Follow the directions on-screen. As the update is applied, your device will reboot to a black screen and a progress meter will progressively fill.

After the installation is complete, the beta version of macOS 13 Ventura will be installed on your Mac. While not all new features will be available immediately, you may still get a feel for the new operating system.
