How to combine duplicate contacts on Android

Google just updated the Android Contacts app. The program now contains a section for managing contacts, enabling users to import, export, combine, and restore Google Contacts. Previously, these instruments were available but out of sight and mind. So what? This guide will help.

Prior to the revamp of Google Contacts, the service offered a plethora of options that were valuable not only for Android users, but also for those using other ecosystems. Personally, my iPhone’s contacts were backed up and updated using Google Contacts’ master contact list. Google Contacts was an excellent method to keep all of my personal data private and up-to-date due to the synchronization options it provided.

Many of the capabilities that were previously buried within the app and on the web are now accessible via the Fix & Manage menu. On the bottom bar, you’ll see a new tab. Although the design is a little strange, it places these tools directly in front of you. Listed below are a few of the tools included in this new section:

  • Consolidate and correct
  • Import contacts from a SIM card
  • Importing a file
  • Export
  • Trash

How to make the most of Google Contact’s capabilities

If you are unfamiliar with these tools, we strongly advise you to become acquainted. While your contacts remain unaffected in the background, understanding how to utilize some of them will save you a lot of time and aggravation in the future if you need to move, remove, locate, or modify contacts. This is how they operate.

Consolidate and correct

Merge & fix is a quality-of-life tool from top to bottom. It enables users to combine several contact files that share the same name or are suspected of being duplicates. Duplications can occur for a variety of causes. Your contacts list may have distinct entries for an email address, a phone number, and an address. The merge tool will detect this and propose that you integrate them all into a single consistent file. This is without a doubt my favorite feature.

On the other hand, the repair option enables you to make additional changes depending on what your Google Account observes about your activities. It may seem frightening, yet it proves to be beneficial. If you have email chains with somebody and have not yet added them as contacts, you will get a suggestion to do so. You are not have to, but it is beneficial to go through the list and make up for lost opportunities to add contacts.

To access either of these features, simply touch Merge & fix and then press any recommendation the tool makes.

Import from SIM, file, and Export

These tools all do essentially the same function. They take a file and place it in a different location, according to your request. Google Contacts’ Import from SIM feature allows you to import contacts from your SIM card. To utilize it, hit Import from SIM and then pick the account to which the data should be imported. Then, go to the bottom of the list and choose the contacts you wish to import.

To utilize Import from file, simply tap it and choose the account to which you’d want to import. After selecting an account, you’ll be sent to your device’s recent downloads. Locate and press the contact file to import. The procedure should commence after tapping.

To accomplish the reverse, tap Export to file. This program will compile your contacts into a single file and download it to your smartphone. Simply tap it and select the account from which you wish to pull contacts. After you’ve made your selection, hit Export to.vcf file. You’ll be sent to your downloads page, where you may rename the file and save it.

Restore contacts

Restore contacts is handy for restoring a previous backup. It may be constructed using backups from your current device or from other devices that are associated with your account. Because you must know which backup you want to restore and from which device in order to utilize this utility, it is unlikely to be used frequently.

To restore a backup, tap Restore backups and then from the dropdown menu, pick the account from which you wish to restore. Examine the various backups and select the one that you wish to utilize. Enter your old screen lock after touching it.

Now that these tools are visible, it’s a little bit easier to reach and utilize them as needed. Importing, exporting, and merging Google Contacts is excellent, as are these tools. Having said that, you are unlikely to need to utilize them on a daily basis.
