The new PlayStation Plus subscriptions were announced by Sony today. They took the existing service and split it into three, with PlayStation Now thrown into the mix as well.
While the base version of the new games will be able to play online, it’s the two other options that people are most likely to be interested in. This is why.
The new three-tier approach will start being used in June in some parts of the world, and more countries will join in the future. PlayStation Now will no longer be sold as a stand-alone product as part of the move.
People who want to pay $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year for PlayStation Plus Essentials will be the first to get the new tiers. Gamers will be able to play with other people, get discounts and two free games a month, and save their progress in the cloud.
Next, we have PlayStation Plus Extra, which gives us even more games. That will give you access to up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games, as well as everything else we talked about. $14.99 per month or $99.99 a year.
This is it! Finally, we can get PlayStation Plus Premium! This includes everything above, with an extra 340 games. Games for the PS3 will also be there, but there will also be games for the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and even the PSP, too. $17.99 per month or $119.99 per year. That’s the best deal for people who want to play as many games as possible.
Some big-name games will be available on the new service, but it won’t get new games on the first day like Xbox Game Pass.
The new Extra and Premium tiers are a big change for PlayStation Plus. With these tiers, our main goal is to make sure that the hundreds of games we offer have the best quality content that makes us stand out from the rest. At the start, we plan to have games like Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal.
These games will be available at launch. We’re working with creative developers from PlayStation Studios and other partners to include some of the best games on the market in a library that will be updated often. More information about the games we’ll be able to play on our new PlayStation Plus service will be coming soon.
As for whether this will be the kind of service change that truly competes with Microsoft, we’ll have to wait and find out. People are excited about the new PlayStation Plus tiers, but they don’t want to wait too long to get them.
