How to Use Microsoft Performance Mode

Microsoft is constantly updating Edge to introduce new features and improve current ones to replace Google’s browser.

Microsoft wants Windows users to choose Edge as their main browser, and the new Performance Mode should help them do so.

Performance Mode seems like it’s meant for power users, but it actually reduces CPU stress and Edge’s resource usage.

How Performance Mode works on your browser is intriguing, so read below for a clear overview and how to enable the option.

What Is Performance Mode?

To begin, Performance Mode is a toggle in Edge. The function optimizes your surfing experience by saving battery and CPU/RAM.

This feature does this by putting superfluous open tabs to sleep after a few minutes.

I appreciate Performance Mode since it is adaptable and can alter resource utilization based on individual surfing habits. It may also optimize performance to match your device’s specs.

Microsoft’s Performance Mode highlights:

If Sleeping Tab is activated individually, Performance Mode will put background tabs to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity. The timer resets when Performance Mode is disabled.
Performance Mode reduces resource utilization and improves user experience, but it may cause less smooth video playing and sluggish animations while the browser is not being used.

How to Enable Performance Mode

Performance Mode isn’t stable yet, so you may or may not discover it on your Edge browser. Build v91.0.856.0 or higher of Microsoft Edge Canary should work. Update your browser to improve stability.

  • Right-click on the Edge icon in the start menu or on desktop, then select Open File Location from the context menu
  • Once in Edge installation folder, right-click on the Edge icon again and select Properties from the options
  • In Edge Properties window, go to Target and type the following in front of the existing command line after a space: –enable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle
  • Depending on the installation folder of Edge, the entire command line should look like this for example: “C:\Users\Olamilekan\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge SxS\Application\msedge.exe” –enable-features=msPerformanceModeToggle
  • Next, click Apply and then OK to save all changes
  • Now, Open Edge browser, click the horizontal three-dots, and then click Settings
  • Navigate to and click System
  • Under Optimize Performance, use the drop-down in the Performance Mode section to set it to Always On

Finally! Now Edge uses less CPU. To disable Performance Mode in Edge, repeat the instructions above and delete the command line from Properties.
