Beta Downloads for iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5

Apple published the first developer betas of iOS 15.5 and iPadOS 15.5 today. This is Apple’s first beta release since the public release of iOS 15.4 in mid-March.

On your iPhone or iPad, navigate to Settings -> General -> Software Update to download the iOS 15.5 or iPadOS 15.5 beta.

The update will appear on your iPhone or iPad only if you have loaded the developer beta profile. If you’re in the public beta channel, the update should arrive within the next 24 hours.

iOS 15.5 may be the final point release for iOS 15 before the general release of iOS 16 in September. Apple has previously stated that it will host WWDC 2022 from June 6-10, during which it will launch iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 10.14.

Along with iOS 15.5 beta, Apple seeded developers with the first betas of watchOS 8.6 and macOS Monterey 12.4.

At the time, it’s unclear what changes iOS15.5 brings, but we’ll update this piece as soon as we learn of any significant changes.

Code confirms iOS 15.5 supports in-app purchases to satisfy regulators

Apple’s newest beta operating system fully supports the new entitlement used by applications to signal they allow users to make external transactions. If a user deletes an app that allows external purchases, iOS will notify them that they cannot manage purchases or subscriptions through the App Store.

Apple has no control over what consumers buy outside of its platform, so it’s crucial to inform users that.

Possible external purchases from [app name]. In the App Store, you cannot manage or cancel outside purchases. Contact the developer for further info.

9to5Mac discovered in Apple’s iOS code that a new notice would appear when a user starts an app that allows for external purchases for the first time. Notably, this functionality isn’t accessible for all apps.

“External Link Account Entitlement” is only accessible for “Reader apps” that deliver digital material like magazines, books, tunes, or videos. Also, the app can’t use Apple’s infrastructure for in-app purchases. Apple must still approve each request.
