RustDesk: Free open-source remote desktop software

Published on

RustDesk is a free, open-source remote desktop app that operates without setup. Use the RustDesk Public Server or Host your own server to boost security and access. RustDesk offers a beta remote web app.

Using remote desktop software, you may access the desktop interface of a distant computer as if you were physically present. It also permits access to the distant system’s data and resources if the remote access user has the required permissions.

RustDesk is an excellent alternative to Team Viewer that includes the following characteristics:

  • RustDesk provides end-to-end encryption, rendering it incredibly secure. It also offers role-based access control to limit authorized users’ access depending on their position or function within an organization.
  • Console: The Console allows you to see logs, track, and control the access and permissions granted to various users.
  • RustDesk is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. In addition, a beta version of the website exists.

RustDesk’s UI is fairly straightforward and structured. The left-hand vertical panel displays your username and password, which you must give with people that need remote access to your desktop. If you wish to remotely access another machine, enter its ID in the ‘Control Remote Desktop’ area in the upper-right corner of the window and then click the connect button. The bottom panel displays your most recent sessions, favorites, etc.

If you provide your ID and password, people can access your machine remotely without your present (unattended access). If you do not reveal your password, you must grant remote access permission explicitly when it is launched. You may also select the capabilities to provide the remote access user at the moment of connection acceptance, including file transfer, clipboard access, keyboard/mouse usage, and more.

RustDesk has a chat function that allows users of both platforms to communicate with one another. Click the chat icon (the first icon) on the toolbar to initiate a conversation with the other user.

RustDesk is a robust and enticing TeamViewer alternative for Remote Desktop Connections and File Transfer. The fact that it is completely free and compatible with a range of platforms makes it an even more attractive option. A number of options and convenient modifications have been made available to boost your productivity and the security of the connection and file transmission.
